Optional Academic & Athletic Tracks

Our Academic tracks are optional. They include “Weird” Science and Surfing and do not require any additional time to participate. In the first week of camp, all campers will volunteer together the mornings of Monday through Friday. Beginning in week 2, those who commit to surfing or “weird science” will replace their volunteer hours, 3 days a week with labs, lectures and/or activities in their chosen track. For example, if you choose the surfing track, you will still volunteer for 2 days a week, then surf 3 mornings a week and have afternoons and weekends free for adventure with all campers.

“Weird” Science Track

Our “Weird” Science track combines wildlife biology and pre-vet medicine! This track is led by our in-house biologist, Sandra Bakkers as well as our on-site veterinarian, Dr. Marian Gamboa. Sandra has a Masters of Science in Wildlife Biology and Conservation.

Campers in the “Weird” Science track will learn the basics of field research, data collection and data analysis that may even help Wild Sun Rescue Center complete actual biological field studies and publish actual scientific studies. For example, we are currently working on a post-release study of howler monkeys which are fitted with GPS collars. Data collected may lead to important findings in order to help us with release strategies (e.g. as individuals or in groups), pre-release protocols (e.g. is predator aversion training necessary), and animal husbandry (e.g. can we incorporate more wild foods and if so, which).

We will also learn about the veterinarian’s role in conservation medicine.  Campers follow our vets as they treat injured wildlife and give support to both our wildlife rescue center and our Scarlet Macaw reintroduction program.  FYI, it’s not for the squeamish!

Campers may shadow vets during patient intakes and necessary surgeries and emergency procedures. Among other skills, they may learn to help treat parasites, administer fluids, perform necropsies, practice syringe and tube feeding techniques as well as suturing, wound care and identifying stages of healing. Patient rounds will be conducted along with topic discussions and presentations.  There will be onsite labs and demonstrations.

Surfing Track

Surfing Cabuya Costa Rica.jpg

Costa Rica is known to have some of the most consistent waves in the world. With its diverse topography and coastal winds, there are waves for every surfer. Add to that the year round heat and warm ocean and there is never a bad time to pick up a board and head to the beach.

The areas of Cabuya, Montezuma, Mal Pais and Santa Teresa provide all sorts of breaks to choose from. Most of our classes revolve around Cabuya’s Rio Lajas, but if the group improves enough, our instructors will bring you to some other breaks in the area. Classes are just under 2 hours a day, 3 days a week. All levels are welcome.
